Manifestation Of Modernity

In a rarity for Goa, art lovers were treated to the works of the great masters like F N Souza, Laxman Pai, Nandalal Bose, Ram Kumar and others at the Manifestations of Indian Modern Art exhibition held recently in Campal, finds Nicole Suares.

The beautifully restored confines of an ancestral Goan home in Campal opened its doors recently to welcome the works of Modernists like FN Souza, MF Husain, Rabindranath Tagore, Laxman Pai and other artists.

Lynn Hilloowala, art advisor with DAG Modern in Delhi, says that DAG Modern is the largest private collection of modern Indian art with galleries in Delhi, Mumbai and New York. They have collaborated with the Serendipity Arts Festival to bring a specially curated exhibition to Goa with a focus on 20th century art ranging from Western academic styles to the Revivalist Bengal School and Santiniketan, from Cholamandal artists from the south to the firebrands of the Progressive Artist’s Group.

Elaborating on the exhibition, Lynn says, “We have brought together works from our collection to highlight different aspects of 20th century Indian art but keeping Goa and its own unique identity and history in mind. We have an exquisite selection of portraits, from the Western academic tradition of portraiture to the more Impressionistic and Cubist styles of later Modern movements.”
