Around the beginning of October 2016 I had just completed a small job on a friend’s house, a lovely barn conversion in Derbyshire.
While having a cuppa the farmer popped round for a chat. “Any chance of having a detect?” I finally piped up. Well I’m sure you are all familiar with the rest. After a lengthy time explaining all about my beloved hobby he said, “Yes okay, but no one’s ever been on here before and let me tell you plenty have asked.”
“Now just you contain yourself Andy,” I thought, “Bingo!”
The following week, armed with maps and aerial photographs, I returned and got the permission details outlined and verified by the farmer.
Come 9 October 2016, which was a lovely day, I set off over to the furthest point of the hundred plus acres of totally undetected fields. The idea was to quickly go over a couple of fields just to test them out.
I arrived and had a brew while scanning the land. With the Minelab Safari switched on, I selected the coin/jewellery factory pre-set mode and off I went sticking to the edge of the first field. After an hour or so with nothing but lumps of lead and a small buckle to show I wasn’t to be put off. “It just feels right here,” I thought.

Lost and Found?
There have been several instances over my long detecting career where, not only has it has been a delight to be able to help people who have lost things, but also a great thrill when such losses are returned to their owners. I have several memories of such occurrences.
