LAIKEN CULLEN, 31, and her husband Jason, 39, live with their kids – Kade, four, and Carter, five months – on a farm in Rietfontein.
“If you’d told me 10 years ago that I’d be farming, I would’ve laughed at the absurdity of it! So how did a preschool teacher like me and an animation-studio entrepreneur like Jason end up tending pomegranate orchards? We took a leap of faith for the life we wanted to live.
We would often chat about raising our future children on a gorgeous farm; envisioning the idyllic, wholesome childhood we’d create for them. But the pull of family, friends, great schools, shops, and hospitals in a bigger city was strong. We couldn’t picture leaving that behind to move to remote farmland.
