Gailey gearing up for second run
Dolphin Digest|September 2020
It’s been almost 20 years since Chan Gailey had his first stint as Miami Dolphins offensive coordinator, but some things haven’t changed very much.

Gailey gearing up for second run

At the very top of the list when it comes to football is Gailey’s philosophy.

“Has it changed? The terminology is the same and some of the plays are the same, but I think it changed from Buffalo to New York (Jets) because of personnel we had, and it’s going to make another change because of the personnel we have here,” Gailey said in July in his first media session since he was hired in the offseason to return to Miami for a second stint. “Are some of the thought processes the same? Yes. But we will be adjusting and adapting to the type of personnel we have, so it may not look the same to John Q. Public. There are some similarities, but there will be things that are different because of the personnel that we have and how we’re going to go about using them.”

It was with the Jets in 2016 that Gailey had last been in the NFL before Dolphins head coach Brian Flores called him to gauge his interest in replacing Chad O’Shea, who was let go after one year as Dolphins offensive coordinator.

The 68-year-old Gailey was enjoying retirement, which included a lot of golf and a lot of time with his five grandsons, but he still couldn’t say no.
