Survive The Killers Of The Sea

Shirk sharks, dodge jellyfish and save your breath – here’s how to be the savviest skipper on the waves.

Survive The Killers Of The Sea

From exploring underwater caves to discovering lost shipwrecks, former marine-turned-explorer and TV presenter Andy Torbet is one of the toughest men FHM has ever met. This is his guide to avoiding a watery grave…

01 YOU THE FULL JAWS TREATMENT FROM A SHARK

“Statistically, more people are killed by their own fridges every year than sharks. That said, people do sometimes get attacked. The people at most risk are swimmers on the surface; divers are usually fine as sharks attack from beneath. If you are attacked, you need to hit it. Go for sensitive areas like its snout, eyes or gills. This should deter the shark. If he’s wounded you though, you’ll likely bleed out in minutes. Your priority is to get to shore as quickly as possible before that happens.”

02 YOU SWIM INTO A POOL OF DIRTY SEA POLLUTION

“The sea is actually really clean, especially around the UK, so it’s not much of a risk here. The places that are really polluted are usually rivers and lakes, which could give you a nasty illness like hantavirus disease which is spread by rat faeces. Generally speaking, your best bet is to avoid water that looks like a toilet if you don’t want a dodgy stomach, and get immediate medical attention and antibiotics if you do get stuck.”

03 YOU’RE DIVING AND YOU RUN OUT OF OXYGEN
