From a course with royal status to top-end resorts, golf around Prague offers something for everyone.
PRAGUE HAS ALWAYS BEEN one of the grandest cities in Europe. From the majestic Prague Castle overlooking the historic capital – which has survived relatively unscathed from WWII – to the regal Charles Bridge that crosses the winding Vltava River, the city holds an attraction unbridled in Europe. But few people realise that the capital of the Czech Republic is also home to several wonderful courses. There are over a hundred golf courses in the country, and a fledgeling golf population of under 40,000 golfers. So not only are there a good selection of wonderful layouts to enjoy, you are also not likely to find any crowds on them. Here are four courses that rank up there with the best in continental Europe, making them ever worthy of a golf trip for overseas guests.
ROYAL GOLF CLUB MARIANSKE LAZNE
There are approximately 40 or so golf clubs in the world that can call themselves “royal”, and the one in the spa town of Marianske Lazne – about two hours from Prague – is proud to be one of them. In fact, it is one of just two Royal clubs in the European continent.
More than just a title from the royal family in Britain, Royal Golf Club Marianske Lazne was conceived and opened by King Edward VII of England in 1905. He used to visit Marianske Lazne for the local spa treatments and fell in love with the place. Combining golf and visits to the spa, something that is still popular today was something that King Edward VII enjoyed, and the golf club was born.
The first nine holes were built in June 1905, with the second nine added in 1929, lengthening the course to 5,664 yards. In 1935, the club marked its thirtieth anniversary by hosting the Open Championship of Czechoslovakia.

AMATEURS OFTEN STAND OVER THE BALL with their feet too wide apart. I understand the appeal—they want to feel more stable throughout the swing, and a wider stance seems a logical way to achieve that.
