Hire a Football Czar A lot has been written about the Jets’ corporate chain of command and how it might not be ideal.
We can write about it all we want, but it’s none of our business how a private corporation wants to set up its power structure. They can do as they darn well please.
But this is America, so we are certainly free to express our opinion.
And we think it might be good to tweak things a little bit.
The Jets could use a football czar — somebody to oversee the football operation — over the GM or coach.
Not that the Rams are the best football operation, but if you noticed, after they fired coach Jeff Fisher recently, it was Kevin Demoff who addressed the media. Demoff is Executive Vice President of Football Operations & Chief Operating Officer for the Rams. The GM and coach report to him.
Owner Stan Kroenke focuses on the business side, his bailiwick, which is also Woody Johnson’s forté. Johnson is a good man, a very charitable man who loves the Jets, but his ideal wheelhouse is the business side. There is nothing wrong with that.
The Jets could use somebody in Demoff ’s role. Their current corporate setup probably could be better.
The Jets’ GM, coach and team president are all equal and report to Johnson.
The Jets have some major decisions to make after this season coming off a bad campaign. Some changes clearly need to me made.
Because the GM, coach and president are all on the same level, if they made suggestions about another guy’s department, it would be like backstabbing. Should equals in a corporate environment be critiquing each other? Probably not, unless somebody gets promoted.
Who is going to make many of the important football decisions that must be made after this season? Clearly Johnson, because he oversees the GM, coach and president. And who has Johnson’s ear the most? His right hand man, Ira Akselrad, a lawyer and money manager.
Akselrad is a brilliant man, but isn’t equipped to make football decisions. Not his expertise.

FIRST DOWN- A lot of potential, but a lot to learn
There is a lyric in an old song by the rock group Chicago that sums up where Zach Wilson is right now:
IN HIS OWN WORDS WITH DEFENSIVE COORDINATOR JEFF ULBRICH - Ulbrich breaks down Jets' defensive personnel
(Marcus Maye) can do it all. I would feel comfortable with him (at free or strong safety). Heâs a guy that, to me, he can play deep, he can play the half field, he can play the middle third, he can do that and you feel comfortable with it. I think heâs got range, speed and athleticism. I think heâs got ball skills and instincts to be a deep safety. But I think heâs got enough size and girth and want-to and courage to play in the box. Itâll be fun to utilize all the things that he does. He can cover tight ends; he can cover some of the wide receivers in this league.

Jets hope initiatives will increase winning edge
Aside from adding as many good players as possible to help the Jets improve, coach Robert Saleh and GM Joe Douglas are trying to turn over every stone to find extra ways to give their team a winning edge, and two examples of this were announced over the course of the offseason, with the additions of a game management coach (Matt Burke) and the installation of an Athletic Care and Performance Department. Letâs take a closer look at these two moves and how they might help the Jets:
