McCown Proved 'Psychics' Wrong

- Dan Leberfeld
McCown Proved 'Psychics' Wrong

Josh McCown was a revelation for the 2017 Jets, having one of the best seasons by a quarterback in team history — before a broken left hand ended his season in Denver.

Where would they be without him? Probably be competing with Cleveland for the first pick in the draft (which would make some Jets fans very happy).

But for those fans who wanted to win games, he’s probably the biggest reason the Jets have won as many as they have.

The team’s recent win over Kansas City is a case-in-point to what a difference-maker Mc- Cown has been for the 2017 Jets.

In this game, the Jets’ pass defense was a disaster, giving up for four easy touchdown passes — two each to tight end Travis Kelce and wide receiver Tyreek Hill.

But McCown led the Jets to 38 points (to match his age, which he belies) to lead the Jets to a 38-31 win.

Do you think this happens with a young inexperienced quarterback? Highly unlikely.

For his efforts against Kansas City, including 331 yards passing and three total touchdowns, the NFL named McCown “AFC Offensive Player of the Week.”

But that didn’t stop some from asking Jets coach Todd Bowles, a few days following this game, if he was going to get the Jets’ young quarterbacks some action.

This tomfoolery might be unprecedented — reporters asking about the job security of an “AFC Offensive Player of the Week” winner.

But it shouldn’t come as a surprise; some of the same people were calling for his head earlier.

There is a lyric in an old song by the rock group Chicago that sums up where Zach Wilson is right now:

IN HIS OWN WORDS WITH DEFENSIVE COORDINATOR JEFF ULBRICH - Ulbrich breaks down Jets' defensive personnel

(Marcus Maye) can do it all. I would feel comfortable with him (at free or strong safety). He’s a guy that, to me, he can play deep, he can play the half field, he can play the middle third, he can do that and you feel comfortable with it. I think he’s got range, speed and athleticism. I think he’s got ball skills and instincts to be a deep safety. But I think he’s got enough size and girth and want-to and courage to play in the box. It’ll be fun to utilize all the things that he does. He can cover tight ends; he can cover some of the wide receivers in this league.

Jets hope initiatives will increase winning edge

Aside from adding as many good players as possible to help the Jets improve, coach Robert Saleh and GM Joe Douglas are trying to turn over every stone to find extra ways to give their team a winning edge, and two examples of this were announced over the course of the offseason, with the additions of a game management coach (Matt Burke) and the installation of an Athletic Care and Performance Department. Let’s take a closer look at these two moves and how they might help the Jets:
