The Number Is Five, Not Three

Memories are the life blood of the Washington Redskins franchise. They are what still keeps the fan base cheering, buying merchandise, showing up for games at FedEx Field.

But as the memories of the good times diminish and distance themselves, so do the fans. The Redskins are fortunate that they have good times to embrace, no matter how far back they are.

The good times, the memories, have value. They do keep the flame of passion burning, even if sometimes that flame flickers.

Redskins fans should hang on to all the good times, all the moments of greatness for this organization, because, as we have seen for the past 25 years – the last time Washington won a championship – those moments don’t last. The tradition, at least, should.

The team is not shy about trotting out those three Super Bowl trophies Joe Gibbs delivered them, and they shouldn’t be, because the sight of them is a reminder for those who lived through the glory of those time how good it can be to be a Redskins fan.

For those who were born after the celebration parades down Pennsylvania Avenue, those trophies show those fans how good it once was – and hopefully can be someday.

Championships represent pride – something in short supply for more than two decades now if you have pledged your heart to this football team.

So if that is the case, why not celebrate all the championships? When you are arguing with fans from other teams about what your team has accomplished, why not tell them the Washington Redskins won five NFL championships and not just three Super Bowls?
