Injury to unsung hero Smith significant loss for offense.

From an offensive standpoint there wasn’t much the Raiders did wrong on offense through the first month of the season, yet not everything went as smoothly as head coach Jack Del Rio had hoped.

In addition to the turnstile at right tackle, Oakland also suffered a significant loss when tight end Lee Smith suffered a broken leg during the Week 3 win over the Baltimore Ravens.

Though Smith has only put up marginal numbers while with the Raiders — 12 catches for 70 yards and one touchdown in 2015, six catches for 29 yards this season — he was nevertheless one of the most important players on Oakland’s offense because of his experience coupled with his role as the team’s blocking tight end.

That’s why Del Rio was lamenting Smith’s injury — which in all likelihood is season-ending — less than 24 hours after celebrating Oakland’s 3-1 start following the come-from-behind win over the Ravens in Baltimore.

Gruden feeling the heat?

“I know there is a big bull’s-eye on my chest, certainly. If the people want to use that as an incentive, then so be it. I worked for Al Davis in 1998. That was pressure. I was 34 years old. I’ve dealt with pressure before. I don’t really feel pressure. I love the excitement and thrill of competing, and I can’t worry about things I can’t control in that regard. I know people will want to step on me and beat me, and that is just the way this league is.”
