The BJP government in Goa is in a fix: it can neither take action against the protesting miners nor circumvent the SC’s order
The Supreme Court ban on all iron ore mining in the state has come as a big blow to the Manohar Parrikar-led coalition government in Goa as it nears its first anniversary in office on March 14.
On February 7, a division bench— of Justice Madan Lokur and Justice Deepak Gupta—ordered the cancellation of all 88 mining leases renewed in 2015. The bench also directed the state government to get all environmental clearances before issuing any fresh lease and constitute a special investigation team, including chartered accountants, to recover the cost of ore extracted in violation of The Mines and Minerals (Development and Regulation) Act, 1957.
