Kolkata Airport Cargo Gateway To North East And Beyond
Indian Transport & Logistics News|January-February 2018

Being one of the fifth busiest airports in India, Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose International Airport (formerly known as Dum Dum Airport) has recently started using solar energy for its day-to-day operations. Managed by Airports Authority of India (AAI), the airport has modernised its cargo facilities that resulted in an increase in cargo handling capacity.

Kolkata Airport Cargo Gateway To North East And Beyond

Located approximately 17 kilometre from the city center, Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose International Airport (NSCBIA) in Kolkata, West Bengal is the largest hub for air traffic in the eastern part of the country. The airport is spread across 2,460 acres and is one of the two international airports operating in West Bengal, the other one being Bagdogra. The airport handled over 15.8 million passengers in the fiscal year 2016-17 making it the fifth busiest airport in India in terms of passenger traffic after Delhi, Mumbai, Bengaluru and Chennai. The airport is a major centre for flights to North-East India, Bangladesh, Bhutan, China and SouthEast Asia. Kolkata Airport won the title of Best Improved Airport in the AsiaPacific region by the Airport Council International in 2014 and 2015.

Modernisation of cargo facilities

Commissioned in October 5, 1975, the cargo terminal at NSCBIA has facilities for processing of import, export, transhipment, unaccompanied passenger baggage and domestic cargo. The international air cargo complex is located half kilometre north of International Terminal building with well-connected road infrastructure for smooth functioning of air cargo services. With the concept of Integrated Cargo Terminal, various agencies were brought under one roof to facilitate quick processing/clearance of cargo.
