Tipu Sultan's Armoury in a Historic Shift, Asia's First!

One of the eight armouries of Mysuru ruler Tipu Sultan, which lies adjacent to the railway track at Srirangapatna Railway Station will be physically shifted to a new place by March 10 which is just 100mtrs from the present location. According to official sources, once the shifting of armoury is done and a new railway line is constructed on this 1.7km stretch, the travel time between Mysuru and Bengaluru will come down by 10 to 15 minutes.

The preliminary work for shifting of Tipu’s armoury is in progress. The ground beneath the armoury has been dug up to 12ft and beams put up. The armoury will be shifted through a trolley. The work is expected to start during the last week of February and be completed by the end of the first week of March. Later, the work on the double railway line will be taken up and completed tentatively by March end or by the first week of April. The project is being executed under the joint direction and supervision of a team of experts from America and an Indian based firm. In a few days, some more experts from America are expected to join the team and monitor the shifting of the nearly 1000 tonne armoury.

According to officials, the shifting of Tipu’s armoury will be an eye opener for the Archaeological Survey of India. The successful completion of this project will open the gates for other such projects. In America, every year nearly 300 monuments are shifted from one place to another but it’s not been done in Asia.

The Cauvery dilemma
Karnataka Today

The Cauvery dilemma

Both north and south Karnataka are in a tizzy over water. North Karnataka over the utilisation of waters of the Mahadayi River (see article on Page 24) and South Karnataka over the utilization of the Cauvery River. This is probably the result of a skewed discourse which is framed by the limited terms of water availability. It’s an I win you lose kind of discourse - water allocated to one state is the loss of another, and the water that reaches the sea is a waste. Is there a way to deal with these disputes other than the legal? Prabhu Mallikarjunan traces the history and outcome of the dispute and puts forth the farmer’s perspective.
