Sikkim, one of the peaceful states of India, is witnessing a political uprising in recent times. Chief Minister Pawan Chamling, considered as ‘Best CM’, with the record of longest serving CM in Northeast, is facing severe opposition from various political arenas. Challenging him and his leadership, the Sikkim Republican Party was launched which aims to bring complete secularism in the state. Northeast Today reports.
February 27, 2017 marks a red letter day in the history of the tiny Himalayan state-Sikkim, as former president of Sikkim Gorkha Jagran Sangh, KB Rai finally launched his new party with the name ‘Sikkim Republican Party’(SRP).
Launching the party at Jorethang, president KB Rai addressed a huge gathering and called out to incumbent Chief Minister Pawan Chamling, alleging that there is no real democracy in Sikkim and that the old laws made by the Namgyal dynasty were discriminatory and unjust.
Speaking exclusively to Northeast Today, SRP president KB Rai said that the main agenda of Sikkim Republican Party is to establish full democracy and establish the concept of a republic. “Proportionate reservation of seat in the Sikkim legislative assembly, land selling and buying between the Sikkim subject holders, correction of documents relating to historical back ground and identity of Nepalese speaking people of Sikkim, creating opportunities for the unemployed youth and awareness about fundamental rights and duties among the masses are some other agendas of SRP,” says Rai.
