How Kamal Nath put his house in order and pulled down BJP’s castle
Kamal Nath does not meet people without appointments. And, he keeps notes of each and every meeting he has had in the past. When he was appointed Congress president in Madhya Pradesh in May, many people complained about his insistence on formalities. Kamal Nath, however, did not budge, and with a reason. “I have planned for this in advance and I want to first checkmate the RSS-BJP grassroots organisation,” said the MP from Chhindwara. “And that has to be done with precision.”
What Kamal Nath achieved, at age 72, is nothing short of a miracle. Never a mass leader, the senior-most parliamentarian in the country instilled discipline in the unruly state unit and raised the much-needed resources. He led from the front, planning every single move. When his strategists advocated personal attacks against chief minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan, the ‘gentleman politician’ declined to hit below the belt. “He brought fresh air to the state Congress,” said Narendra Saluja, deputy chairman of Congress media wing.
