WREXHAM striker Chris Holroyd helped him-self to a hat-trick at the Racecourse as the Dragons rebooted their promotion challenge with a first victory in more than a month.

Holroyd’s quite brilliant treble came at the expense of a woeful Torquay United, whose hapless defending contributed heavily to a defeat that sees them firmly rooted to the foot of the table.

But the Gulls started brightly enough, Jamie Reid and Sean McGinty forcing fine saves from home keeper Chris Dunn before Wrexham went ahead in their first attack, Holroyd heading in from Marcus Kelly’s corner.

It was the striker’s ninth of the season and helped to settle the Dragons, who went further ahead 31 minutes when Paul Rutherford’s free-kick was flicked on by Scott Boden for Manny Smith to nod home at the near post.
