Football: how Conte turned Chelsea into winners.
When Chelsea sealed the Premier League title with a 1-0 win over West Brom last week, it felt significant “in more ways than one”, said Barney Ronay in The Guardian. This was the fifth time the Blues have been crowned champions since Roman Abramovich bought the club 14 years ago – meaning they are now without doubt the dominant English team of that “mini-era”. What’s more, this title came in Antonio Conte’s first season in charge. The mercurial Italian coach “inherited a messy, enervated squad, fresh from the worst title defence in 25 years”, and turned it into a ruthless winning machine. With Abramovich reportedly set to offer Conte a massive new contract, this could be the 47-year-old’s first Premier League title of many.
