PM CONFIDENT OF FIXING PROTOCOL

RISHI Sunak has promised his new Brexit deal is the "best for Britain" as he prepares to finally seal an agreement with EU chiefs today.

The Prime Minister, who will meet with the European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen this afternoon, is confident his plan to fix the Northern Ireland protocol will "resolve issues, and ensure Brexit works". Speaking to the Daily Express he admitted that the "stakes are high", but expressed hope that the deal could achieve "something special" and protect the Union of the United Kingdom.

Mr Sunak said it was not a threat to Brexit and delivers "greater sovereignty" to Northern Ireland.

The Prime Minister vowed to "get the job done" and expressed hope critics would accept this "was all about the people and communities of Northern Ireland".

He said: "This is something very positive. This will show Brexit truly works and will finish the job.

"This deal will work better for businesses and communities and get goods moving. It will resolve the issues so we can all move forward.

"This will give Northern Ireland control of their own destiny."

After months of negotiations and a week of delays, the PM and Ms Von der Leyen are set to finally sign off the deal this afternoon. In a joint statement, they "agreed to continue their work towards shared, practical solutions for the range of complex challenges around the Protocol on Ireland and Northern Ireland."

The leaders are expected to meet at late lunchtime for final talks.
