Holidaymakers were given fresh hope last night when Portugal confirmed talks to let Britons travel quarantine-free.

From Monday, travellers arriving in England will be forced to stay indoors for 14 days.

But the Portuguese foreign minister said his government is in discussions with the UK on an “air bridge”, allowing tourists to avoid quarantine.

Augusto Santos Silva wants to “guarantee British tourists to Portugal would not be subject on return to England to any kind of quarantine.”

The new rules take effect on Monday in England, with a review every three weeks. Boris Johnson said: “We’ll explore possible travel corridors with countries that have low rates of infection but only when evidence shows it is safe.”
