THE £4 million-a-year boss of Barclays quit today over his links with disgraced financier and convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein.
Jes Staley stepped down from one of the most powerful jobs in the City after he and the bank were told on Friday of the “preliminary conclusions” of an investigation by regulators. Officials at the Financial Conduct Authority and the Prudential Regulation Authority — part of the Bank of England — launched a probe in December 2019 after emails between the two men were handed to them by US counterparts.
In a statement today, Barclays said: “In view of those conclusions, and Mr Staley’s intention to contest them, the board and Mr Staley have agreed that he will step down from his role as group chief executive and as a director of Barclays.”
