Yangon Residents Flee Martial Law Area As Death Toll Hits 183

Military charges international envoy of the country’s ousted government with treason; two more shot and killed by security forces ater a morning of peaceful marches in parts of Myanmar

Residents of a protest flashpoint district in Myanmar’s biggest city fled on flatbed trucks and tuk-tuks on Tuesday after security forces escalated the use of lethal force against anticoup protesters, despite international appeals for restraint.

On Tuesday morning, local media outlet The Irrawaddy published photos of residents fleeing the township, crowding onto flatbed trucks stuck in columns of snaking traffic.

Some carried their pets on the back of motorbikes, while others crammed their belongings in vinyl bags on tuk-tuks.

“We can see the people on the roads for as far as one’s eye can see,” reported local outlet Democratic Voice of Burma.

Meanwhile, Myanmar’s military has charged the international envoy of the country’s ousted government with treason, according to an announcement on Tuesday on army-run television.

Dr Sasa, who is currently overseas, was charged with treason for encouraging a civil disobedience campaign, calling for international sanctions and serving as special envoy to the United Nations for an illegal organisation of ousted lawmakers, military-run Myawaddy TV said in a report.
