‘Ring Of Fire' To Be Seen In The Sky Today

Solar eclipse will be visible from 10am to 3pm in some parts of the country

While summer solstice marks the longest day of the year, a solar eclipse — popularly known as Surya Grahan in India — is a phenomenon in which the moon comes between the Sun and the Earth thereby fully or partially blocking the Sun’s rays reaching the Earth’s surface.

The distance between the Earth and the Moon at the moment of the eclipse can dictate the type of eclipse that will take place — either a full or a partial eclipse.

Both of these phenomena will be taking place today, on June 21. The next solar eclipse, which will be a partial solar eclipse, visible from India will take place on October 25, 2022.

WHAT IS A ‘RING OF FIRE’?

As Dr Debiprosad Duari, Director, Research & Academic, at the M.P. Birla Institute of Fundamental Research in M. P. Birla Planetarium in Kolkata explained, “On June 21, the path of annularity and the Moon would not cover the whole Sun but a ring of fire would be seen around the periphery of the Moon’s disc.”
