“We’ve been meeting with Metro Manila mayors to remind them to strengthen their COVID-19 response. They have to monitor cases closely,” Duque said in a radio interview, citing the slight increase in cases in the past days.
The year 2020 ended with a total of 476,061 COVID-19 cases – 9,244 deaths and 439,796 recoveries – documented by the DOH as of Dec. 31.
The number of cases was projected to go up significantly due to increased mobility during the Yuletide season. Actual figure is expected to reflect in the DOH’s Case Bulletin for COVID-19 by up to the middle of January as it takes 14 days for the disease to manifest symptoms.
Duque noted it is important for the local government units to make sure they are prepared in terms of availability of quarantine or isolation facilities, testing, contact tracing and case finding.
To prevent the health system from being overwhelmed, Duque advised private hospitals to allocate 20 percent of their beds to COVID-19 patients and public hospitals, 30 percent.
In Manila, city health director Dr. Arnold Pangan said residents who leave the city for vacation are required to undergo swab test before they are allowed to return to their respective barangays.
