Cardiac Issues Spike Among Caregivers

Often juggling household chores and office work, an increasing number of urban women are reporting heart diseases these days, say city doctors. Reason: their tendency to ignore their nutritional requirements, coupled with lack of on-time medical attention.

“The risk of heart attacks among men and women is much the same these days, with stress levels among the latter increasing substantially. Now, close to 50% of the women are working in offices in addition to handling household chores. As a result, we are receiving an equal number of men and women patients – from across all age groups -- unlike earlier when majority of the patients were men,” said Dr Sai Ravi Shankar, senior consultant cardiologist.

Worse, in most of these cases, the disease is detected only once it reaches an advanced stage as women tend to have subtler symptoms as compared to men, doctors add.
