According to a new study conducted by an online dating platform, 33% of single Indians are using video dates to get to know each other better before meeting up IRL (in real life). Not only does this save them from the physical risks that come with stepping out during the pandemic or interacting with a total stranger, but also the awkwardness or boredom that’s a byproduct of a bad first date!
During pre-pandemic days, singles would often meet up in coffee shops, cinemas or swanky restaurants, often not knowing whether the date would turn out to be pleasant or disastrous. “I was once with someone who did not talk at all. I was so bored, but I thought it would be too rude to just get up and leave within a few minutes,” says Piyush Prakash, a 28-year-old engineer and resident of Delhi, who prefers to video date now as he finds it more comfortable. He says, “I have realized that during a virtual date, I am more comfortable telling the person honestly if I don’t think we get along. In the worst-case scenario, you can just disconnect the call,” he says.
“Single Indians now go on ‘pre-dates where they explore virtual dating for the first time and get to know one another before meeting in-person,” mentioned a recent study by Bumble, that also found out that 78% of single Indians feel the need to build trust before meeting in-person, which has given rise to ‘slow dating’.
