Socially Distant Friendships: Finding New BFFs Online

Gurgaon-based entrepreneur SrishtiSingh and Anubhav Agarwal from Mumbai have been friends for close to two years. “We talk every day,” says Srishti, “We share things about work, what movies to watch and random stuff.” It may sound like any run-of-the-mill friendship but the catch here is despite being self-termed BFFs, the two have never met.“We came across each other on Instagram three years ago and started talking only in late 2019. Then the pandemic happened and we didn’t meet. But that does not change the fact that she isn’t one of my closest friends,” explains Anubhav. It may not be everyone’s cup of tea but ‘social media friendships’ make sense to some. The concept of pen pals may be slightly outdated for most millennials and Gen Z but they have found their own 21st-century version of it.

USING DATING APPS FOR PLATONIC FRIENDSHIPS

So, where and how do people find new people to befriend online, one may ask. Dating apps, for starters. In a recent nationwide survey, a dating app found that 28% of single Indians are more interested in building platonic relationships and friendships online than before the pandemic. During the first three months of 2021, the average time spent on the friend-finding mode within the app globally grew 44% for women and 83% for men. “There was no point of being on a dating app except to have conversations for much of 2020. Dates were out of the question. So, I used it to ‘meet’ people virtually and engage in conversations. I actually ended up building a couple of good friendships with no romantic inclinations,” says 29-year-old Manasi Khatri, who made two “good friends” through dating apps last year.
