Mumbai: The Indian Meteorological Department’s Santacruz observatory began maintaining records in 1945.
In the 24 hours ended on Thursday, the Santacruz observatory registered 91.2mm of rain, smashing its previous record of 53.8mm on December 6, 2017, when Cyclone Ockhi passed close to the city’s coast. This December rain also broke the monthly rainfall record for the decade— 75.8mm in 2017. The IMD’s Colaba observatory logged 90.2 mm rain on Thursday.
The showers are due to a cyclonic circulation over south-east and east-central Arabian Sea that has been bringing moisture-laden winds over the city. Light rain is “very likely” to continue on Friday.
