Mumbai: A day after being pulled up by the highest court in the land for delaying work on sewage treatment, the BMC on Tuesday again scrapped tenders worth around Rs 18,000 crore for setting up six sewage treatment plant (STPs) in Mumbai. The Supreme Court had rapped BMC for delaying installation of STPs to prevent discharge of sewage into the sea in complete disregard of orders from the apex court as well as the National Green Tribunal (NGT).
The BMC has now scrapped the tenders for the third time in three years. The SC had said that “Mumbaikars' well being and fate can’t be left to the civic body's inaction and lethargy”. It had directed the municipal commissioner to remain present through video conferencing at the next hearing to explain the delay.
