In July-August this year, modellers variably but confidently predicted that a third wave of Covid would hit India in August and recede by September or surge in October and retreat by November. Those predictions have been negated by the passage of time. At mid-October, case counts are continuing their downward trend, test positivity rate is very low and hospitals are not seeing a rush of Covid cases. People and policymakers both seem to believe that the roaring torrent of the second wave has ebbed, to resemble the slow drip of a slightly leaky tap. Public health experts are more circumspect and urge caution in our conduct even as we resume normal life with greater freedom. Keep the seat belt on even when the flight has taken off, they say.
As the festive season advances to the crescendo of joyful Deepavali celebration in early November, there is good news of rising vaccination numbers hitting the 1 billion mark. Shops are bustling with business and schools are returning to teaching in person. International travel regulations are relaxing restrictions. Is it time to say ‘all is right’ where India is concerned?
