The Supreme Court on Friday ended the decade-old ordeal of Mohd Qamar, who was born in India in 1959, went to Pakistan as an eight-year-old with his mother to visit her relatives, got stranded there due to her sudden demise, came back with a Pakistani passport, only to end up in prison.
A bench of Justices D Y Chandrachud and Hima Kohli ordered release of Qamar from Lampur detention centre, where he has been detained since 2015 under the Foreigners Act after he served out his three-and-half-year sentence on being convicted by a Meerut court for illegal stay in India.
