Looking to improve his architectural shots, Tim Lee Williams sends a selection of his images of German buildings

Architect Analysis

Currently I live in Wolfenbüttel, which is known for having the highest concentration of timber-framed architecture in Germany, and is famed worldwide for the Herzog August Library. Due to my location I like to shoot architecture, and I’ve only been shooting digital since 2012. I hope that a Portfolio Review will help me improve my photographic skills.

I took my first image one evening in April 2017, below the Phaeno Science Centre in Wolfsburg [1]. I had elegant lighting, which created a dramatic atmosphere. I feel that the defining feature of my shot is the silhouette of the person walking through the tunnel.

I took this on my D7100 with my Tamron 17-50mm lens. I used a narrow aperture of f/9, which gave me the long depth of field I needed to keep my entire shot sharp. I did some processing in Photoshop with the Nik filter set and prefer this blue-style toning because I think the architect’s work (Zaha Hadidid) resembles a UFO.

My next photo depicts a building I saw while on a boat tour down the river Spree in Berlin [2]. I took it in late September 2017 in the mid-afternoon and chose a shutter speed of 1/640 sec to freeze any motion I’d likely get from shooting on the boat.
