Right when social media is complaining that mirrorless camera lenses aren’t as small as they were intended to be, Nikon has introduced two ‘Micro’ lenses – the Nikkor Z MC 50 mm f/2.8 and Nikkor Z MC 105 mm f/2.8 – both designed for the Z-series Mirrorless cameras. The 50 mm Micro lens performs double duty – as a ‘normal’ lens (35 mm format) as well as a Micro lens allowing the user to capture small subjects at up to 1: 1 (life size) magnification. The lens is very compact and lightweight and is the reason for this review.
Design & Build Quality
The Nikkor Z MC 50 mm f/2.8 lens is well built and lightweight. It offers resistance to dust and water sprays. The lens mount is made from metal and has eleven contacts to allow communication between the lens and the camera body. A raised white plastic dot helps to align the lens to the camera body. A rubberised gasket on the lens mount prevents dust or water splashes from entering the lens. Filter size is 46 mm. The lens is made in China.
Key Features
The lens is constructed with 10 elements in 7 groups (includes 1 x ED, 1 x Aspherical element) and uses a Stepper Motor to move the lens elements quickly and quietly for accurate focus. The front element is treated with a fluorine coat that resists water and finger grease from adhering to the element and making the cleaning easier.
