British titles at stake

THERE is no major championships to qualify for after the postponement until next year of the World Indoors in China due to the coronavirus outbreak but there are still prestigious national titles at stake in the Emirates Arena this weekend.

MEN

Sprints and hurdles

The 60m entries are led by Andrew Robertson, Harry Aikines-Aryeetey, Oliver Bromby and veteran and former multiple winner Dwain Chambers, who at the age of 41, will be looking to roll back the years.

Eugene Amo-Dadzie, Adam Thomas and Sam Gordon add to a big field of entrants in the short sprint.

David King faces Ethan Akanni and Cameron Fillery in the sprint hurdles, although Andrew Pozzi is one of the big names opting to give the championships a miss.

James Williams, meanwhile, is fastest on paper going into the 400m.

In the 200m, all eyes will be on Andrew Morgan-Harrison after his fast 20.66 win at the BUCS Championships last weekend.

Endurance

Guy Learmonth will hope for another good run on home soil as he tackles the 800m. He faces fellow Scot Josh Kerr and Alex Botterill, while Piers Copeland will hope to build on his 1500m PB in Glasgow last weekend.

UK outdoor champion Spencer Thomas and London Olympic finalist Andrew Osagie are further entries in one of the most intriguing events of the weekend.

In the 1500m, Tom Keen, James McMurray, and George Mills are among those likely to be battling it out for medals, while the 3000m is set to see Jonny Davies, Jamaine Coleman and Phil Sesemann among the main contenders.

Tom Bosworth, meanwhile, heads the entries for the 5000m race walk.

Field events

Scott Lincoln will be one of the biggest favourites of the weekend as he goes for gold in the shot put against Youcef Zatat and Daniel Cork.

Trail time

WHEN looking for a trail or off-road running shoe, it’s often all about the grip. However, given that no two paths are the same, careful consideration is required. What’s the terrain like where you’ll wear the shoes the most? If you’ll be negotiating soft, wet and muddy conditions then look for deeper lugs. For tackling gravel tracks and forest trails then more evenly spaced lugs will work better. When it comes to cushioning, consider how hard the ground will be; if it’s soft then you’ll be fine in low-profile shoes, but on those firmer tracks reasonable cushioning will be called for.
