MIKEY IS ON SONG

FOOTBALL will always be Mikey Johnston’s first love, but music is a close second for the talented young Hoops winger.

Johnston was introduced to music from a young age. Growing up in Stepps, there would always be music playing at home on his parents’ record player, and while the 21-year-old’s tastes are more reflective of his generation, Johnston has an appreciation for everything that came before.

“I’m always listening to music,” said Johnstone in an exclusive interview with the Celtic View. “I’ll listen to music on the way into training every day, in the gym and on the drive home. I have a good pair of Sony headphones that I use at home, but when I’m out and about I tend to just use earbuds because they’re easier to carry around.

“There’s always music on in the changing room and I do like dance but my go-to is more rap. Spotify has a thing called Rap Caviar with all the latest rap and I always check that out to see if I like anything.

“My Mum and Dad love their music and always have something on in the house. I grew up listening to a lot of their stuff that they’d play on their record player. I’ve got a playlist of older songs I’d hear around the house growing up, and it has songs like Over My Shoulder by Mike and the Mechanics and Karma Chameleon by Culture Club on it.”

Johnston’s interest in music led him to give it a go himself and, earlier this year, his friends helped him pick a guitar. He began learning songs from the likes of Oasis and REM which broadened his musical horizons further.
