2019 Sooner Nationals - Tulsa
“I had a dream,” Billy Allen tells me. He was in Louisville, for the Bluegrass nationals, where they struggled all weekend with not-the-greatest dirt and track conditions. Although fast asleep, he was consciously thinking ahead to the next national track-build - in Tulsa. There, he knew they’d have great dirt to build another one of his master-pieces. It’s the same great dirt that they use for Grands, and the Ford Truck Arena is large enough to not limit what they can build.
“It was around midnight, and I woke up,” Bill explains. His roommate and fellow track builder Lance Maguire was still awake, watching a TV show on his laptop, with his earbuds in. “Lance! LANCE!” Billy shouted, before getting his attention. “I just had a dream that we built a U-in-a-U in Tulsa. I think we should do it.” Two weeks later, that’s just what they did. And the racers and fans loved it.
THREE DAYS
This year’s Sooner Nationals was a 3-day National, and it was hosting the annual President’s Cup. Riders would not only be competing for the day’s prize, but also the accumulative overall score in their age, for a cool silver Cup on Sunday. At the same time, State scores would be tabulated, and California racers unknowingly helped their State win yet another #PrezCup. This is probably the ninth year in a row that California has won the title; so many that we’ve completely lost count.

GOLD CUP NORTH CENTRAL
If there is one good thing about this yearâs Covid closures of states and counties, it is that tracks that might not normally have gotten a shot at hosting a National or Gold Cup event, were now given that opportunity.

GOLD CUP SOUTHEAST
This year the DK Bicycles Gold Cup South East Finals were held at one of the fastest BMX tracks in Alabama - Circle City BMX, in Dothan. If trying to claim one of the coveted Gold Cup Plates brought you to Circle City BMX for your first time you might have been surprised when you first saw the track layout.
GOLD CUP SOUTHWEST
When you roll into the local Quiktrip and one of Tucsonâs finest looks at your shirt and asks if you know Corben Sharrah, you can only be in one city in America. Often coined as the loudest city in BMX, it doesnât matter if there is a single fan or a gaggle of Tucsonans, they know how to bring the energy.
GOLD CUP NORTHEAST
With all of the uncertainty in event planning this year, it was not a huge surprise that the DK Bicycles North East Gold Cup Finals shifted locations somewhat last minute. We were very lucky to have it and at a great location, Akron BMX in Akron, Ohio. The Big Red Truck was last here for the 2018 North East Gold Cup Finals, and the track is located in a pretty incredible location.
