The Leakey's Sisterhood
PULL Magazine|April 2019

There’s a serious storm comin’ every time Fall Risk Racing’s, Leakey Sisters show up at the track. First comes the Hurricane, followed closely by the Tornado. Hannah and Taylor Leakey have quickly become a force to be reckoned with on the National circuit - and their little brother “Atomic” Austin is happily following in their footsteps.

The Leakey's Sisterhood

“Hurricane Hannah” was given her nickname by her father, who knows his motocross history. (The original “Hurricane Hannah” was named Bob, and he’d gotten his start as a BMXer before becoming one of the greatest motocross racers of all time.) At first, she hated the nickname. “I remember not wanting my dad to call me that, but then I got used to it and it’s kind of stuck. I know he’s a famous motocross racer.” Bob might be pleased to know that this Hurricane Hannah is living up to the Legend.

“I remember being jealous of Hannah having a nickname,” Taylor tells us. “I said ‘Dad - what about my nickname?’ So he thought about it for a day and came up with Tornado. “Now, most people know us as that.”

Both Leakey sisters are living proof of BMX camps and clinics paying off. “When I first started, I did Beginner Clinics over and over and over,” admits Taylor. Since their start - five years ago for The Hurricane and three years ago for The Tornado, they’ve done BMX clinics in Arizona and California, and have a long list of trainers and coaches who have helped them get to where they are now. “My first clinics were at Black Mountain, with Joe Sowers,” Hannah tells us. “Then Mike took over. I’ve trained with Tyler Brown and Bubba Harris. We’ve done a lot of SuperCamps with Burlin and summer camps at Chula Vista with Tyler. We also work with Jared Becker on a weekly basis.

If there is one good thing about this year’s Covid closures of states and counties, it is that tracks that might not normally have gotten a shot at hosting a National or Gold Cup event, were now given that opportunity.

When you roll into the local Quiktrip and one of Tucson’s finest looks at your shirt and asks if you know Corben Sharrah, you can only be in one city in America. Often coined as the loudest city in BMX, it doesn’t matter if there is a single fan or a gaggle of Tucsonans, they know how to bring the energy.
