Naps king looks ahead to the month’s big races after being edged out on a 100-1 place in Cesarewitch
Before we have a look at the racing in the next five weeks let me get a chip off my shoulder about the Cesarewitch.
There is little doubt that the various race readers/columnists around the country do a fantastic job, but winner apart, they completely missed out on the mosteye-catching run among the 34 stayers in the form of 100/1 shot CAPE CASTER.
Plum last as the field turned for home with 10 furlongs to run, the six-year-old made stealthy headway up the Rowley Mile course to be beaten a shade over 14 lengths in ninth place after being about 40 lengths off the pace.
What made it even worse was I backed the gelding at a fifth the odds to finish in the first eight!!!
It was an enormous performance from the son of Cape Cross and on decent ground he looks primed to land a nice early season handicap hurdle.
Okay, count to 10 and move on. I am always fascinated by the Melbourne Cup and this year’s event on November 7 looks a really high class renewal.
