When budding chefs and shooting mates Chris Marney and Mark Robson held their first game dinner in 2018, it was meant to be a one-off event for friends and family. They had no idea what a success it would be and how in demand their services would be afterwards! Catering for so many people in a barn with only a tap on site proved quite a challenge, but one that they rose to with great aplomb.
Now, in their spare time, the duo run Game for Anything, a catering company serving up delicious game-based dishes at shoot lunches, pop-ups, in pubs and at events for friends and family.
All of this came from a simple shared passion for cooking and shooting. Neither are professional chefs, nor had they ever worked in the food industry before, but their philosophy of ‘if you kill something, you eat it’ resulted in dishes being tried out at home, then on shoot days and it just went from there. As members of the Rough Rovers syndicate, they have access to plenty of game and, between them and the other members, they ensure that every single bird that is shot goes into the food chain, whether that’s to feed a pub full of diners or to try out new dishes at home.
Part of the driving force behind turning their passion into a business is a desire get more people eating game. “We want to bring game to those that wouldn’t otherwise eat it,” explained Chris. “We’ve done that at some of our bigger events [which, incidentally, raised over £2,500 for charity], but I think it’s important to normalise game – to take the mystery away – and help people make it into a midweek supper.”
