Richard Edwards catches up with Hampshire leg-spinner Mason Crane about his hopes for an Test recall this summer against the Old Enemy.
Mason Crane was just a wide-eyed kid when the all-conquering Aussies arrived here in 2005 – now he’s hoping to have the chance of continuing a barren streak on English soil that dates back to 2001.
The 22-year-old was handed a first Test cap in the final Test of the Ashes in Sydney last January, but then suffered a series of injury blows that wrecked his domestic summer. Now fit and firing and looking sprightly on the eve of the new season, Crane tells The Cricket Paper that he can’t wait to get back on the field and remind county and country what they’ve been missing.
As he stands on the balcony of the Shane Warne stand – an apt location for the returning leg-spinner – you can sense Crane’s frustration and his desire to make up for lost time – hardly surprisingly given that his last competitive run-out came in the Royal London Cup final against Kent at the end of June.
In between times, he has often lived a lonely existence, attempting to regain full fitness during the miserable winter months, while others were playing in far-flung locations around the world.
