IN the first 34 years of 50-over international cricket, England topped 300 runs a total of 34 times. Since 2015 they have managed it 23 times.
That conscious decision to be more attacking and take advantage of big hitters has paid dividends – and now England are turning to sports science in an effort to continue their one-day revival.
It started at the beginning of this season, with the team using Hawkeye to work on launch angle when hitting the ball long.
And while some of the scientific approaches may be commonplace in golf, ECB Head of Science, Medicine and Innovation, Raph Brandon, is confident they can make a big impact in cricket.
He explained: “It’s an initiative for this year. We had a session in May, it’s an England fitness testing day at the start of the international season, and this time we added a batting competition into it.
“The players really engaged with it, I couldn’t get (Joe) Root and (Jonny) Bairstow off the thing.
