Strength In Depth Can Help Red Rose Bloom
THREE into two just doesn’t go but fortunately for Lancashire they have solved their top-order batting conundrum ahead of their opener against Nottinghamshire today.
England starlets Keaton Jennings and Haseeb Hameed will open for the Red Rose, both seeking another crack at Test cricket after short-lived spells in the England side.
And keeper-batsman Alex Davies, who impressed up top last summer, drops to number three – a season after becoming the first Lancashire gloveman to reach 1,000 runs.
It came down to negotiation between the trio, led by newly-appointed captain Liam Livingstone, that saw Davies agree to drop down – and he completes arguably the best top order in the country.
“It takes a strong captain to open up the floor to players and allow them an opinion,” said Jennings, who opened with Hameed for the Lions this winter.
“If that’s Liam’s first democratic move as captain, it’s an outstanding way to go about it.
