England set out to save coach’s job –despite doubt over Stokes
ENGLAND captain Joe Root has backed underfire coach Trevor Bayliss to stay on in the job and urged his players to put in a match-winning performance for the Australian against Pakistan at Headingley.
Root was last night waiting on the results of a scan to see if Ben Stokes, England’s talismanic all-rounder, would be fit for the must-win final Test that starts in Leeds today.
All the indications were pointing towards Stokes not recovering in time from a tight left hamstring, meaning a likely debut for uncapped 19-year-old Surrey all-rounder Sam Curran.
