For four seasons now, the Giants and their fans have waited for tight end Evan Engram to have that career-defining season, only to get left waiting at the curb. Engram has teased the Giants with his athleticism and his potential while also perplexing them by making fundamental errors and killing them with dropped passes and missed opportunities.
That could all change here in 2021. Engram is healthy, finally coming off a season where he played in all 16 games and was named to the Pro Bowl last season. The Giants are finally pulling the plug on the idea that he is a traditional in-line tight end and went out and got a real one this year in veteran free agent Kyle Rudolph.
The expectations for Engram now are strictly as a playmaker and a weapon to be used to exploit mismatches. After years of wondering what role Engram can play on the offense, fans are still wondering. But this year, they are bound to see a different side of the former first-round pick out of Ole Miss.
Last year, Engram reeled in 63 passes for 654 yards but scored just two touchdowns and one of those was on the ground. He committed several turnovers and his drops almost always hurt the Giants on the scoreboard (and eventually in the standings).
