While preseason football isn’t exactly must-see TV for most football fans, jobs and careers may be on the line for certain players, making these exhibitions absolutely crucial for them. For these five Giants, the upcoming quartet likely means a little more to them than it will to others on the roster:
QB Geno Smith
Barring a catastrophe, Eli Manning is going to take the quarterback reps off Exit 16W of the New Jersey Turnpike for the 14th consecutive season. While he’s expected to take on a pupil role this season, third round draft choice Davis Webb won’t be going anywhere, as the Giants obviously have big plans for him. So that leaves returning veteran Josh Johnson and Smith, whose struggles with the Jets were well documented by Giants fans. Going up against the veteran Johnson, who has some time in the Giants’ offensive system under his belt, Smith is hoping that a change in MetLife Stadium is what he needs to reboot his career. Smith has tremendous talent and a great arm but this is likely his last chance to put it all together.
