The losing mentality is starting to sink in and it is beginning to be reminiscent of the queasiness most of us suffered during the “Wilderness Years” (1964-1980) when the once-proud Giants became a perennial NFL doormat.
Since the beginning of 2013, the Giants have compiled a 40-63 record and have been irrelevant in each season other than 2016, when they qualified for the playoffs with an 11-5 record under head coach Ben McAdoo. But since 2017, they’ve won just 10 of their next 39 games. Only the Cleveland Browns have a worse record over that three-year span (the Jets are also 10-29 over the last three years).
The team seems to accept losing too easily. The coaches are not lighting a fire under their charges and perhaps that is why the Giants have fared so poorly in the first half of games this year.
Where is the passion? Where is the fire? There is none coming from the coaches and not a whole lot coming from the players. They have few leaders and those leaders have fewer followers.
The defense has played so passively, television and radio analysts have consistently questioned the competence of James Bettcher, the defensive coordinator, who was famous for his aggressive style while with Arizona. That style is out of style here with the Giants, who after seven games are ranked 28th in the NFL in total defense.
