We went down to a 5-3 aggregate defeat to Arsenal in the League Cup semi-final in January, 2007, but wins against Cardiff City, Southend United and Fulham put us through to an away meeting with Chelsea in the quarter-final of the FA Cup.
We led 3-1 at half time at Stamford Bridge on March 11, 2007, thanks to strikes from Berbatov, Hossam Ghaly and a Michael Essien own goal. The Blues fought back late on to tie the match 3-3 and won the replay 2-1 at the Lane seven days later.
A 6-4 aggregate success against Sporting Braga in the UEFA Cup set up our third quarter-final of the 2006-07 season as we were drawn to face Sevilla. A 2-2 draw with the Spanish side in N17 on April 12 wasn’t enough to overturn our 2-1 defeat at the Ramón Sánchez Pizjuán stadium a week earlier.
We lost just one of our final 11 Premier League matches as we finished fifth in the table for a second successive season and booked an instant return to the UEFA Cup. We won eight of those games, including a memorable 4-3 victory at West Ham United, which saw Paul Stalteri get our winner in the dying seconds.
