This long-awaited harbour on Ireland's east coast has become a popular destination for both local and visiting yachtsmen and deserves a visit, says Norman Kean.
Greystones is a prosperous town of 10,000 people, on the coast of County Wicklow at the southern end of the commuter rail service from Dublin. It used to have a little drying harbour – basically just a pier jutting into the Irish Sea. Ten years ago, when the Celtic Tiger was roaring, a project was mooted to build a much bigger harbour, with a marina, and 340 apartments in several blocks. Needless to say this didn’t go down well with everyone, but the project got started in spite of objections and a fine new harbour was built to a high standard. But before ground was broken for the apartments, the property market collapsed, and so did the project.
