FIRST PLAY ROGUE COMPANY
Hi-Rez Studios has done well to distinguish itself in the freemium online multiplayer space, from bringing a different perspective to the MOBA with Smite to giving the hero shooter some fantasy flair in Paladins. Its latest venture is more of a challenge as Hi-Rez tackles the team-based tactical shooter.
Rogue Company feels like a third-person alternative to Counter-Strike and Valorant. It’s played as 4v4, with teams alternating between halves to plant a bomb or defend their territory. Upgrades unlocked in each half are carried over, and you can even change character at half-time.
It has a casual feel but that doesn’t mean it’s a cakewalk, as well-drilled teams will quickly overwhelm and outflank you. Making use of your rogue’s unique ability – such as Ronin’s one-shotting ballistic knife, or Saint’s medic drone – can easily turn the tide.
While it over-compensates with its edgy swagger, there’s a diverse roster (even if you’ll need to grind or pony up to unlock beyond the starting six rogues) and each has its own exclusive loadout – so if you want a sniper rifle you’ll need to get Phantom. More importantly, gameplay feels solid, especially on Switch. It’s a treat to see a multi-platform game run sharply and smoothly on the console in 60fps, and one that makes fine use of gyro aiming.
