Indian weddings are an overwhelming experience with extravagant efforts put in by everybody. From the lights to the wedding outfit of the bride to the venue, everything has to be impeccable – no stones to be left unturned. but the shine in the bride’s eyes fades the moment someone says – “No, this is a bad omen.”
Long have the superstitions dominated the culture of India, so much so that if one tries to do otherwise, he or she is overshadowed with the thoughts of forsaking God or forging some idol that he has believed in since years. In the contemporary world, despite reason defying superstition, people hold intact the values attached to their culture and lineage. Especially, at the time of an auspicious occasion like the union of two souls for eternity called wedding; people get more superstitious or religious. Here are some of the superstitions that have lingered around for years and still prevail:
Rain on your D-Day:
Although, it might seem au contraire for a good omen; believe it or not it is considered one. Most believe that rain on the wedding day signifies fecundity, cleansing and renewal. As the rain descends from the clouds, it marks the beginning of growth and fertility just like marriage is the beginning of a new future. Some believe that the droplets on the sand wipe away the sadness of the past, again symbolising new beginnings.
Colour of the Henna:
As the first line of mehendi covers the bride’s palm, everyone awaits for it to leave an intense colour that will decide the fortune of the bride-to-be. It is believed that the lightness or the darkness of the henna indicates how long a marriage would last and how much love will fill the air. It is said that the colour reveals the level of protection the couple will receive from the Gods or how much love will be showered upon the bride by her mother-in-law.
