Nakhane Mahlakahlaka (30), popularly known as Nakhane, takes us on a journey of his love for the arts that began with singing and evolved into writing and acting.
My childhood in Port Elizabeth, Eastern Cape, was filled with music. I was surrounded by classically trained singers in my family and would often wake up to them singing soothing melodies. Inevitably, I fell in love with music as I started singing with them from a young age to explore my own voice. By the age of seven, I realised that I had a special connection with music when I received a standing ovation after a solo performance at a school concert. From then on, I began to learn more about music, including how to play instruments. This resulted in me becoming a singer, songwriter, composer, performer, producer and arranger. In 2013, I released my first album titled Brave Confusion. My music career has been growing steadily, and I’m excited to be on a European tour of my second album released this year, You will not die.
